Charles Ellingworth is a businessman and author who has worked in Hong Kong and London. His first published novel Silent Night has been long-listed for the Authors’ Club Best First Novel. Theodore Zeldin described it as ‘an astonishing book,’ which has ‘the haunting profundity that is the mark of a classic’.

Silent Night is set in the terrible last year of World War 2 and is about two very different love affairs, from the point of view of two women, under the shadow of flight of the population of Eastern Germany ahead of the Red Army and the fire-bombing of Dresden as well as in occupied France with its conflicted loyalties. It covers the experience of ordinary German civilians that is barely covered in English fiction.

Charles lives in the UK but travels widely both by boat and microlight, sailing the Atlantic and piloting his own airplane to the far south of Libya.
