Elspeth Graham grew up in Northumberland, England. She studied Law at Exeter University but never became a lawyer. Instead she became passionately interested in both reading to her children and in understanding how they learned to read. She began writing books for very young children with her husband, and fellow author, Mal Peet. They wrote many books together, primarily for educational publishers, before Mal (who kept writing longer and longer books) went on to become an award-winning writer of young adult and adult fiction. From time to time Elspeth and Mal still love to write books together. Their Cloud Tea Monkeys, illustrated by Juan Wyngaard, was shortlisted for the 2011 Kate Greenaway Medal. They have two more picture books, Mysterious Traveller, illustrated by P J Lynch, and Night Sky Dragons, illustrated by Patrick Benson, due to be published in late 2012 and early 2013.

Elspeth continues to be fascinated by how children learn to read and is currently working on the think2read project.
