Julia Johnson came to Dubai in 1975, and soon became a familiar face reading children’s stories on Dubai Channel 33, subsequently appearing in BBC and Radio productions in the UK. She has toured schools in Dubai and the UK in Theatre-in-Education productions, acted in several stage plays and recorded over 100 audio books.

Let's Visit the United Arab Emirates was commissioned and published by Macmillan in 1987. She has subsequently written over a dozen stories including The Pearl Diver, A is for Arabia, One Humpy Grumpy Camel, The Cheetah's Tale, A Gift of the Sands and The Peacock and The Mermaid which were published by Stacey International U.K.

Julia's stories frequently focus on the history and culture of the Arabian Peninsula. She is keen to preserve and continue the oral tradition of storytelling, and to encourage an awareness of the rich and colourful heritage of the Gulf through her writing. She tours schools, colleges and universities throughout the UAE, Oman, Bahrain, Qatar and Kuwait with talks and workshops for students and teachers.

The Leopard Boy was published by Frances Lincoln Children’s Books in 2011.

'A beautiful story, a wise and wonderfully told tale of conservation in action; landscape, animals and ourselves, all of us woven together, all of us dependent on one another for our survival. A book of hope.' - Michael Morpurgo

'Draws the reader's attention to the dilemmas facing people trying to improve their lives. It will appeal to those concerned about the destruction of habitats and the future of endangered species. A thought-provoking book with an important message. - Parents in Touch

'…exciting and lyrical… This story, with its balance of adventure, environmental concerns and evocative descriptions, will enchant both boys and girls, and will certainly lead more thoughtful readers to find out more about other endangered species.' - Armadillo Magazine
