Moroccan poet Mohammed Achaari has published ten collections of poetry, a short story collection and two novels, and his work has been translated into French, Spanish, Dutch and Russian. He holds a law degree and has also worked in journalism. A political activist who was jailed for a period in the early 1980s, he has held various government posts, including that of Minister of Culture in Morocco. He has twice been president of the Moroccan Union  of Writers.

In 2011 he was declared joint winner (with Saudi writer Rajaa Alem) of the International Prize for Arabic Fiction, for his second novel القوس و الفراشة (The Arch and the Butterfly), which explores Islamic extremism and the effects of terrorism on the family unit.
