Dr Shihab M Ghanem obtained a double degree in Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering from Aberdeen in 1964, a Master of Engineering degree in Water Resources Development from Roorkee University in 1975 and a PhD in Economics from Wales (Cardiff) in 1989.

He is a UK Chartered Engineer, a Fellow of the UK Institution of Mechanical Engineers and the UK Institute of Management, and a member of various other technical and literary bodies in the UAE and overseas. Between 1996 and 1999 he was also Chief Editor of World of Engineering, the UAE Society of Engineers’ technical magazine.

He has held various senior positions, including Deputy Permanent Secretary of Public Works and Communications in Aden, Chief Engineer of Eterno Supplies in Lebanon and Plant Manager of Gulf Eternit in Dubai. Currently he is Managing Director of INDUSTECH Consulting.

He has published 45 books including 11 books of verse in Arabic and one in English and 18 volumes of translated verse.

He has received various awards, such as the Al Owais Prize for Research and the Rashid Award for Scientific Excellence (1989). Among his poetry awards are First Prize for Poetry in the UAE in 1984 and the Book Prize from the Ruler of Sharjah for poetry translation in 2003 (shared with the Slovak ambassador to the UAE) and in 2007.
