Charles Arthur is technology editor for the Guardian, a position he has held since 2005. His 20 years in the technology media also include writer and editor roles at the Independent and New Scientist and have brought him into contact with key players in the technology world, including Bill Gates, Steve Ballmer, Larry Page and Steve Jobs.
He is the author of Digital Wars: Apple, Google, Microsoft and the Battle for the Internet (2012), published in the UK and US and translated into Korean, Chinese, Thai, Russian, Finnish and Spanish. A second edition is in progress, due for publication in early 2014.
He is co-founder of the Free Our Data campaign in the UK, which helped persuade the government to make map and other publicly-collected data such as business and land registrations free for use by citizens, creating new businesses.
