Dave Wood’s distinctive style and progressive attitude towards calligraphy have earned him worldwide recognition and acclaim.
Born in Manchester, he studied at the College of Art, gaining a solid background in lettering, graphic design, drawing & painting, airbrush, silkscreen printing and typography before emigrating to New Zealand and later Australia, working as a freelance designer and calligrapher. His handmade books and limited edition prints have been purchased by libraries and collectors throughout the world. He has exhibited in galleries throughout Australia as well as internationally, including a display of his hand-made books at St Paul’s Cathedral.
Dave had been intrigued with the art of beautiful writing since the age of 17, and in the broader view of calligraphy in the commercial field. He believes his work demonstrates a 21st century approach by expanding upon traditional techniques rather than simply copying history.
In 1991 his peers awarded him a Fellowship of the Society of Scribes & Illuminators in London, becoming one of only two Fellows in Australia.
In 1998 his self-published artbook, The Painted Word, was distributed worldwide. Dave’s work has been published in international journals as well as calligraphy books including Encyclopedia of Calligraphy and Enrich Your Calligraphy and most recently in Paper Sculpture books & magazines.
Dave realised his ambition with his wife, Jan, in 1994, opening Australia’s first Calligraphy Art Gallery. His work can now be viewed from his studio in Pomona, Queensland or online.
