Maitha Al Khayat
Maitha Al Khayat is an Emirati author and illustrator of children’s literature. She spent the first years of her childhood in the United States and the United Kingdom, and her passion for children’s books started while she was in middle school in the United Kingdom. Enjoying her time in the quiet library environment inspired her to become a young reader and she has not stopped reading and writing since. A full time housewife and mother of four, her family commitments have not stopped her from pursuing a career in writing for children.
Her first book, I Love My Dad’s Long Beard, was inspired by her children and focuses on how different boys enjoy their fathers’ company. My Own Special Way tells the story of a little girl who imitates her older sisters, only find that when she tries to copy the way they wear their headscarves, she will have to find her own approach. It received the award for Best Children’s Book at the Riyadh Children’s Forum 2011.
In 2012 and 2013 many more of Maitha’s books are due to be published by Kalimat, including When a Camel Loves Loqaimat, My Mum’s Amazing Socks, Turn off the Lights, Nawaff the Ship Carpenter and The Houseless Louse.
