Francis Matthew is the Editor-at-Large of Gulf News, where he writes on UAE and GCC social and political issues. He is a regular commentator on Arab affairs on TV and international media, and has spoken at several conferences including Davos.
Matthew is the co-editor of Building a Nation and The Rise of a Nation, two pictorial histories of the UAE including many previously unpublished pictures.
Matthew has edited two books on the UAE, Rise of a Nation (which won Sharjah International Book Fair’s Best UAE Book award) and Building a Nation.
Matthew has worked in the Middle East as a journalist for 30 years, with occasional spells in Europe. He has worked in Dubai since 1995 when he came back as Editor of Gulf News where he still works, but he first worked in the UAE as a reporter from 1983 to 1987, having also worked in Egypt, Lebanon, and Yemen.
Matthew speaks Arabic, and studied Arabic and Islamic History for his BA at Exeter University.
