After completing her degree at Edinburgh University, she worked in several different roles – in the health service for six years, a cartoonist and a stand-up comic – before the publication of her first novel Amanda’s Wedding in 2000. A prolific author, Colgan has gone on to publish some 20 books and was described by the New Statesman as ‘Sharp, well-observed and hilarious’.
Colgan’s Welcome to Rosie Hopkins’ Sweetshop of Dreams was a Sunday Times Top 5 bestseller and won the RNA Romantic Comedy Novel Award 2013. Meet Me at the Cupcake Cafe was also a Sunday Times Top 10 bestseller and won the Melissa Nathan Award for Comedy Romance 2012.
She has also written for the Doctor Who series of books, including Doctor Who: Dark Horizons, in 2012 and Into the Nowhere in 2014.
In 2015, Colgan published a children’s book, Polly and the Puffin, which has earned rave reviews.
Colgan writes reviews, blogs and columns for the Guardian. She is married with three children and lives in London and France.
