January Choice: The Brave by Nicholas Evans
“Alternating past and present, Evans expertly juggles his twin narratives until they come shatteringly together as father and son yield to the combined weight of the secrets they hide. Combining elements of the prep school drama, the Hollywood novel, the western, and the war story, Evans skillfully mixes genres to create a real crowd-pleaser.” – Publishers Weekly
On Wednesday 22 January, our first meeting of 2014, the FRG will discuss The Brave by Nicholas Evans, who is probably best known for his multi-million selling debut novel The Horse Whisperer. The group will meet from 7:30-9:00pm at the Dubai World Trade Centre Club room.
There’s little love in eight-year-old Tom Bedford’s life. His parents are old and remote and the boarding school they’ve sent him to bristles with bullies and sadistic staff. The only comfort he gets is from his fantasy world of Cowboys and Indians. But when his sister Diane, a rising star of stage and screen, falls in love with one of his idols, the suave TV cowboy Ray Montane, Tom’s life is transformed. They move to Hollywood and all his dreams seem to have come true. Soon, however, the sinister side of Tinseltown casts its shadow and a shocking act of violence changes their lives forever.
Venue for 2013-14
We have very kindly been offered a delightful new venue for our monthly meetings by Festival supporter Jane Northcote who manages the World Trade Club. From May we will be meeting in The Club Room on the 33rd floor of the World Trade Centre, Dubai. This provides one of the best views in the Emirate and although normally a members’ only venue, the FRG have been invited to make this our home for the 2013-14 season. Free valet parking is available and light refreshments will be available to purchase. With the ambiance of a country house library, this is a wonderful place to discuss our monthly reading in quiet and comfortable surroundings.
Please reserve your place by responding to the event planner on the FRG Facebook page or by emailing: firstname.lastname@example.org

29 May 2013
As ever, we spent an animated 90 minutes or so discussing Peaches for Monsieur le Curé by Joanne Harris who will be one of our 2014 LitFest authors. Even one of our members who is allergic to chocolate was tempted to a taste, so Joanne’s ability to make the reader’s mouth water was as strong as ever. There were some reservations about the length and the mystical goings-on, so there will be questions to ask at the FRG panel next March.
